The International Training Centre of the ILO (ITC ILO), the training arm of the UN's International Labour Organization in Turin, is bringing AI avatars into learning and training. Holoconnects provides the embodied layer: the avatar isn't a chatbot in a browser tab, it's a life-size presence learners walk up to and talk with, powered by the Holobox and the AI Hologram tier.
ITC ILO frames an AI avatar as a conversational learning system built with a clear purpose, a curated knowledge base, and defined behavioural boundaries, not an open-ended chatbot. On a Holobox that system becomes a life-size, naked-eye character: it listens, answers in the learner's language, and stays inside the knowledge and guardrails it was given.
The AI Hologram tier runs on the Holobox as the front end for the avatar: real-time speech-to-speech in multiple languages, answers drawn from a curated knowledge base rather than the open web, and a clean hand-off to a person when a question falls outside its scope.
It sits within ITC ILO's Learning Innovation Programme, whose AI-avatar work moved from experimentation to practice through pilots launched in 2025, captured in the Centre's own public toolkit (linked below).
An on-screen chatbot is easy to ignore; a life-size presence is not. Embodying the avatar at human scale, viewable by a group without a headset, changes how learners engage: it reads as someone to talk to, which is the point of a training avatar.
Curated and bounded. Answers come from a defined knowledge base with behavioural limits, the anti-hallucination posture a UN training institution needs.
Multilingual and always on. The avatar handles first-line learner questions in many languages, around the clock, consistently.
Embodied engagement. A life-size, naked-eye presence draws learners in where a screen chatbot does not.
Human in the loop. When a question exceeds the avatar's scope, it hands off to a person rather than guessing.

Holograms bring guest speakers to life, explain complex topics visually, and connect with students in ways that feel real, human, and memorable.
