Every hologram-industry term the Holoconnects site uses, defined in plain language. Cross-linked to the underlying products and use cases so you can follow a definition through to a real deployment.

Products
- Holobox
Holoconnects' flagship life size hologram display.
The Holobox is a self contained ~2-metre unit that projects a life size 3D hologram of a person, product, or content. Transparent LCD in front of a custom-engineered light box. Plug and play. Supports live remote presence (two Holoboxes linked over a network) and pre recorded playback. The range runs from €4,500 (22-inch Holobox Mini) to €25,000 (86-inch flagship).
- Holobox Mini
Compact tabletop variant of the Holobox.
Same holographic technology as the Holobox, smaller form factor. For retail counters, hospitality reception desks, and constrained spaces where the full-size Holobox doesn't fit. From €4,000.
- Hologrid
Interactive modular hologram wall for retail and events.
Modular composition of 2 to 5 synchronized 86-inch Holoboxes forming a wall-mounted hologram surface. Used for product launches, in-store activations, and large format event installations. The Visit Britain "modular HoloWall" at Paris Gare du Nord is a Hologrid deployment. From €45,000 for a 2-unit configuration; larger walls are quoted per project.
- AI Hologram
Pre trained holographic avatar that interacts conversationally.
An AI driven holographic character rendered on a Holobox-class display. The "AI powered Fatima" deployment for Capgemini in Abu Dhabi is an example; Aiden by Best Western uses one for AI powered hologram check-in. From €2,500.
- Recording Station
In-studio capture rig that prepares content for Holobox playback.
The rig that captures talent (or content) in the format the Holobox renders. Lives at the Culemborg studio or ships to customer sites. Handles multi angle capture so the finished projection reads correctly from the Holobox's expected viewing angles. From €4,000.
- The 43
43-inch hologram unit for mid-scale installations.
Where the full Holobox is oversized but the Holobox Mini is too small. Used in mid-scale retail and event applications. From €7,000.
Technology
- Transparent LCD
The display panel behind every Holoconnects hologram.
A display panel a viewer can see through when it's off. When rendered content is playing, the panel shows the subject; the viewer perceives the depth behind the panel. The transparent LCD by itself doesn't produce a convincing hologram, it's the light box behind it that makes the projection read as three-dimensional.
- Light box
The custom-engineered back-lighting component that generates perceived depth.
The piece most vendors don't get right. It provides the luminance, directionality, and back-lighting behaviour that make the projected subject read as three-dimensional rather than as a flat image on transparent glass. Combined with the transparent LCD it produces the hologram illusion.
- Multi angle capture
Content-production step where subjects are captured from multiple angles for correct Holobox playback.
Standard single camera video doesn't reproduce the depth-cue behaviour the Holobox exploits. Multi angle capture ensures the finished projection reads correctly from the viewing angles the Holobox will actually be placed at. Done at the Recording Station.
- Two way live mode
Real time interactive projection between two Holobox units.
A person standing in front of a Holobox in one location is captured, transmitted, and rendered life size on the Holobox at a destination location. Latency is low enough for two way conversation. This is how a single concierge serves multiple hotels, or a doctor consults remotely at life size scale.
Types of hologram
- Interference-based hologram
The original technical meaning of "hologram" (Dennis Gabor, 1947).
A laser illuminates a subject and a reference beam; the interference pattern is recorded on a photographic plate. When the plate is later re-illuminated, a true three-dimensional image reconstructs. Museum walls, credit cards, and lab benches, not commercial displays.
- Pepper's ghost
The 19th-century optical illusion behind stage "holograms" (e.g. Tupac at Coachella 2012).
A high brightness image is projected onto angled reflective foil, giving the audience the impression of a person on stage. Not a hologram in the strict sense; impressive from a fixed viewing angle, falls apart from the wings. Distinct from the transparent-LCD hologram class the Holobox is in.
- Transparent-LCD hologram
The class of commercial hologram display the Holobox belongs to.
Transparent LCD in front of a custom light box, producing a life size projection with perceived depth. Requires no headset. Distinct from stage illusions and interference holograms. The commercial hologram category that actually shows up in hotel lobbies, hospital consult rooms, and trade-show stands.
- Volumetric hologram
True three-dimensional image floating in space (still mostly research).
A hologram that occupies actual volume, viewable from any angle without any display panel. Exists in research prototypes and small-scale demonstrations; not commercially available at Holobox-scale in 2026. Not to be confused with transparent-LCD holograms.
Use-case terms
- Holographic presence
Being visibly, life size "there" via hologram, as a concierge, doctor, or lecturer.
The category of Holobox use case where the value is a person being present at scale, not the visual content itself. Example: a hotel front desk staff member in one location serves five hotels simultaneously via Holoboxes. Also called holographic telepresence.
- Holographic telepresence
Alternative name for holographic presence.
Same concept as holographic presence. Both terms are used interchangeably across Holoconnects deployments and industry press.
- Life size hologram
A hologram rendered at full human scale rather than reduced.
The Holobox produces a life size projection, a projected person appears the same physical scale as they would if standing there. Life size is what makes viewers react to a Holobox as if they're meeting someone; smaller-scale holograms (kiosk-size) don't produce the same effect.
- Holographic content production
The capture-process-deploy pipeline for content the Holobox will play back.
Three stages: capture at the Recording Station, process into the Holobox display format, deploy locally or via live stream. Custom content production is an end to end service Holoconnects offers alongside the hardware.
